The Iowa Society of Medical Assistants (ISMA) supports medical assistants across the state and is affiliated with the American Association of Medical Assistants. In addition to hosting an annual conference and listing job opportunities, the ISMA publishes a monthly newsletter with practice updates, offers scholarships and awards to exceptional medical assistants, and provides discounts on the CMA exam.

The Iowa Department of Health, Iowa Board of Nursing, and Iowa Medical Board all state that medical assistants do not need a certification to work as part of the healthcare team. However, they further clarify that medical assistants should only be given responsibilities for tasks appropriate for their level of training. A certification — such as the CCMA, which you’ll test for after completing our Iowa Medical Assistant Training Program — lets employers know you have been trained to do all the tasks medical assistants commonly do.
Medical assistants do not need a license to practice in Iowa. Because they are unlicensed healthcare personnel, they are required to work under the supervision of a licensed physician or registered nurse.

Medical assistants in Iowa commonly perform both clinical and administrative tasks. Clinical duties typically include: drawing blood, performing EKGs, measuring vital signs, assisting with bedside procedures, giving vaccines, performing catheter care, and documenting patient information. Administrative duties include scheduling appointments, managing patient records, performing medical billing and coding, and more.

Yes! We are partnered with the NHA. All our graduates are eligible to take the NHA's national medical assistant certification once they successfully complete the program.
Medical assistants are unlicensed healthcare personnel who work under the supervision of a licensed physician or registered nurse. They cannot examine, diagnose, or treat patients independently. They may only perform tasks for which they have been specifically trained and that have been delegated by their supervising provider.
