The Illinois Society of Medical Assistants (ISMA) unites medical assistants across Illinois to maintain high standards through educational programs, advance the profession through honest and efficient service to the public, and demonstrate knowledge and professionalism within the medical community. The ISMA is an affiliate of the American Association of Medical Assistants, with chapters covering Chicago, Rockford, Springfield, and other regions statewide.

Medical assistants are not required to be certified in Illinois. Having a certification, such as the CCMA, which is the one you'll test for after completing our Illinois Medical Assistant Training Program, shows employers that you have completed training and are able to do all the tasks commonly done by medical assistants.

Medical assistants in Illinois perform both clinical and administrative tasks. Per the Illinois State Board of Education, clinical duties include: performing routine lab tests, preparing patients for procedures, assisting the physician during exams, drawing blood, sterilizing instruments, checking vital signs, and explaining the physician’s instructions to patients. Administrative duties include greeting patients, handling billing, answering phones, maintaining records, inventorying supplies, and preparing exam rooms.

Yes! We are partnered with the NHA. All our graduates are eligible to take the NHA's national medical assistant certification once they successfully complete the program.
Medical assistants are unlicensed individuals who work under the supervision of a licensed healthcare provider. They cannot examine, diagnose, or treat patients independently. In addition, Illinois states that nurses cannot delegate to medical assistants any tasks or duties that require the specialized knowledge and skill of nurses, such as giving medications.
