Graduate from high school or complete your GED
To work as a certified pharmacy technician in New Hampshire, you must be 18 years old and have a high school diploma or GED. You must also pass a background check showing no drug-related crimes on your record.
You’ll need these records when you apply for pharmacy technician training courses and for your license with the state.

Enroll in & complete a pharmacy technician training course
New Hampshire does not require pharmacy technicians to complete a training course. However, you must pass a national certification exam to be licensed as a certified pharmacy technician.
In addition, pharmacy technicians who complete a training course that is accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) can do additional tasks like medication compounding.
Stepful’s New Hampshire Pharmacy Technician Training Program is accredited by ASHP and prepares students to pass a national certification exam. It covers essential topics like pharmacy law, medication safety, and hands-on training in drug preparation.
03
Gain hands-on experience through an externship
During an externship, students work alongside pharmacists in real-world settings to develop their skills. This training prepares you to succeed at your job. It’s also something employers look for when hiring.
Stepful has a network of thousands of partners that can provide externship opportunities for its students. We provide support in finding an externship and throughout your placement to help you succeed.*
Additionally, many retail and hospital pharmacies offer externships. Pharmacies like Walgreens have programs in local pharmacies that provide opportunities for students working toward certification.
*Please note that students must be available Monday-Friday, 9-5 p.m., to qualify for externship support.

Pass a pharmacy technician certification exam
New Hampshire recognizes two national certification exams for pharmacy technicians. They are the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) exam and the NHA’s ExCPT exam. In order to register as a certified pharmacy technician, you must pass one of these exams.
Stepful’s program is designed to prepare students for the NHA ExCPT exam. Our students have a 75% pass rate on the exam, which is 12 points above the national average.
After passing the certification exam, you will submit your certification and application to the New Hampshire Board of Pharmacy to receive your license.

Start your career as a certified pharmacy technician
With your license in hand, you can begin your job search. Certified pharmacy technicians work in a variety of settings. A quick search of job sites like Indeed and ZipRecruiter will show how many job listings exist for certified pharmacy techs in New Hampshire.
Stepful’s career support team helps students with resume building, job applications, and interview coaching to give you the best possible chance of getting the job of your dreams.
All pharmacy technicians working in New Hampshire must register with the New Hampshire Board of Pharmacy. Registration ensures that pharmacy technicians meet state guidelines and are eligible to work under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist.
In New Hampshire, there are two levels of pharmacy technicians. One is a registered pharmacy technician, a license that enables you to do entry-level tasks, focusing more on administrative duties.
The second is a certified pharmacy technician, a license that enables you to do the full scope of tasks assigned to a pharmacy tech.
To become a certified pharmacy technician in New Hampshire, you must pass one of these national certification exams: the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) exam or the NHA’s ExCPT exam.
Though New Hampshire does not require certification, many employers prefer or require it. Certification demonstrates your competency in pharmacology, medication safety, and pharmacy law.
