How to become a certified Pharmacy Technician in Florida

Compared to other states in the United States, Florida has the highest degree of regulation of pharmacy technicians. Becoming a pharmacy technician in Florida involves several key steps:

01

Graduate from High School or Complete Your GED

To become a certified pharmacy tech in Florida you must be at least 18 years old, and earn a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Candidates are expected to undergo a thorough criminal background check and have a clean criminal record—with no felonies.

02

Enroll in and Complete a Pharmacy Technician Course

Upon beginning to work in a pharmacy, your employer will require you to obtain training by completing the official PTCB exam. Enroll in and complete a pharmacy technician training program approved by the Florida Board of Pharmacy. This step is crucial to ensure you receive the appropriate education and hands-on experience.

After completing your training, register as a pharmacy technician with the Florida Board of Pharmacy. This process involves submitting an application and proof of completed training.

Our program here at Stepful offers a 100% online pharmacy technician training program that can be completed in just four months and supports you from enrollment to employment.

03

Complete a Pharmacy Technician Externship

Externships provide students with hands-on experience and allow you to develop a routine, perfect your skills, and build confidence in your role. Some programs in Florida may require an externship to provide hands-on experience. Many local retail pharmacies offer opportunities for students to gain real-world practice.

Our team at Stepful collaborates with select pharmacies and healthcare facilities to provide externship opportunities, though availability may vary by location. Regardless of placement, we offer personalized support, including resume assistance and job search guidance, to help students advance in their pharmacy technician careers.

04

Pass Your Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam

While certification is not mandatory to work in Florida, many employers prefer certified or licensed candidates. The two main certification options are offered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) and the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).

Each certification has its own set of requirements. Stepful’s online pharmacy technician certification course is approved by both the PTCB and NHA, ensuring students meet national industry standards.

05

In Florida, job seekers can explore opportunities online through platforms such as the State of Florida Jobs, private hospitals and pharmacy job boards, and even healthcare associations.
