01
Earn Your High School Diploma or GED
A high school diploma or GED is required to become a medical assistant. You’ll need this credential when enrolling in a training program or applying for jobs. If you don’t have one, you can complete a GED program online or in person in just a few weeks.
02
Complete a Medical Assistant Training Program
Missouri does not require certification to work as a medical assistant, but most employers prefer to hire candidates with formal training. Completing a recognized program improves your job prospects and equips you with essential clinical and administrative skills.
Stepful’s 5-month online Medical Assistant Training Program prepares students for certification and employment. Our program is affordable, flexible, and designed to help you gain confidence while learning from experienced instructors.
03
Gain Hands-On Experience Through an Externship
Externships allow students to apply their skills in real-world healthcare settings under professional supervision. Hands-on experience in clinics or hospitals helps build confidence and makes you a stronger job candidate.
At Stepful, we help eligible students* secure externships with partner healthcare facilities and provide guidance throughout the experience. In Missouri, externship opportunities may be available at Cox Health and Jordan Valley Community Health Center (not necessarily affiliated with Stepful).
*Eligibility is based on academic standing, financial status, and availability for at least 20 hours per week during regular business hours.
04
Pass your Medical Assistant Certification Exam
Certification demonstrates your competency and increases your job opportunities. Missouri does not require a specific certification, so you can choose from:
- Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) – National Healthcareer Association (NHA)
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) – American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)
- Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) – American Medical Technologists (AMT)
Stepful’s program prepares students to take the CCMA exam, which focuses on clinical medical assisting skills.
