How to get certified & become a Medical Assistant in Wyoming

If you have ever been curious about starting a healthcare career, enjoy working with other people, and love to learn new things, becoming a medical assistant might be the right choice for you. Medical assistants have impactful careers with excellent job security, many growth opportunities, and a decent annual wage. The following steps will help you become a medical assistant in Wyoming.

01

Obtain a High School Diploma or GED

To get started on your path to medical assisting, you will need to either complete high school or pass a GED exam. If you need a different option, online high school and GED courses can be completed in just a few weeks.

02

Complete a Medical Assistant Course

After either completing high school or earning your GED, you can choose a medical assistant training course. Before you enroll, you’ll need to decide if you want to complete a certification-only program or earn an associate degree.

Certificate-only programs can be taken either online or in person, and take just a few months. These types of programs will prepare you for your certification exam and usually include 40-100 externship hours. At Stepful, we offer a 4-month medical assistant course that prepares our students for the most popular certification in the US.

Degree programs require students to complete math, art, and literature courses in addition to medical assisting classes. Earning a medical assisting degree takes two years and can cost several thousand dollars.

Although degree programs are longer and more expensive, they result in the same certifications as certificate-only programs.

03

Complete a Medical Assistant Externship

Most reputable medical assisting training programs include externship opportunities.

Externships are unpaid work experiences where students get to shadow a medical assistant for several shifts. During their hours, students will practice hands-on skills, understand the day-to-day operations of a medical facility, and build relationships with other healthcare providers.

Externships can last a few days to several weeks, and students usually spend their days with the same externship coach. Students who perform well during their externship may be offered a permanent position.

Organizations in Wyoming that offer externship opportunities to medical assistants may include Campbell County Health, Cody Regional Health, and Aspen Mountain Medical Center

At Stepful, we connect students in strong academic and financial standing with externship interview opportunities at our partner clinics. These externships provide 80 to 160 hours of hands-on clinical experience, helping you gain practical skills before beginning full-time employment.

04

Pass your Medical Assistant Certification Exam

After completing their training program, students must take and pass their medical assisting certification exam. Average passing rates for medical assisting certification exams are around 76%.

Several certification exams are Nationally recognized. These include:

  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) offered by the American Association of Medical Assistants.
  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) offered by the American Medical Technologists
  • Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) offered by the National Healthcareer Association. This is the one Stepful prepares their students for, as it is the most popular one and contains a clinical component to the preparation.

Each of these exams contains questions about basic medical assisting topics. They are designed to assess a student's ability to care for patients safely and effectively. During the exam, students are prohibited from using testing aides such as calculators, notes, or cheat sheets. Tests must be taken either with an online proctor or at a testing center.

05

Search for Jobs

Healthcare workers such as medical assistants often use websites like GlassDoor, Indeed Monster, and ZipRecruiter to find jobs. Medical assistants in Wyoming can also search on the Wyoming Department of Workforce Services website or look at specific healthcare websites.

At Stepful, we provide students with resume assistance, mock interviews, and career coaching to help them secure jobs in their field. From enrollment to employment, we're here to support you every step of the way.
