Obtain a High School Diploma or GED
A high school diploma or GED is required to enroll in a medical assistant training program like Stepful’s. Both traditional and online diplomas are accepted, and many can be completed in just a few months. Earning a diploma or GED is the first step toward a rewarding career in healthcare, opening the door to hands-on training and certification.
02
Enroll in a Medical Assistant Training Program
Choosing the right program depends on cost, length, certification success rates, and available student support.
- Online Certificate Programs – Affordable and flexible, online programs like Stepful’s can be completed in as little as four months and prepare students for the CCMA certification, the most clinical-oriented certification.
- In-Person Programs – Trade schools and community colleges offer hands-on training but typically take longer and cost more.
- Associate Degree Programs – A two-year or more option that includes general education coursework but is not required to become a medical assistant in Oregon and could be the most expensive option.
03
Gain Practical Experience Through an Externship
Top training programs offer externships to provide hands-on experience under expert supervision. Stepful’s program facilitates externships opportunities after the course is completed. Interview preparations and curriculum services are also available for students to succeed with their first interviews.
Organizations in Oregon that may offer externship opportunities, not necessarily in partnership with Stepful but that the general student population could apply, include Oregon Health & Science University, Legacy Emanuel Medical Center, and Providence St. Vincent Medical Center.
04
Pass Your Medical Assistant Certification Exam
When you have finished your classwork and externship hours, you will be ready for your certification exam. Oregon does not mandate certification, but most employers prefer certified medical assistants. Popular certification options include:
- Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) – American Medical Technologists
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) – American Association of Medical Assistants
- Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) – National Healthcareer Association, this is the one Stepful prepares their students for as it’s the most clinical oriented of them all.
Each certification exam covers essential healthcare knowledge, including infection control, anatomy, and patient safety.
