Complete a Medical Assistant Training Program
When choosing a program there’re some things to consider like cost, duration, certification pass rates, and student support. Here’re some options for local training programs.
- Online Certificate Programs – Fast and affordable, programs like Stepful’s can be completed in just four months and prepare students for the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) offered by the National Healthcareer Association.
- In-Person Programs – Community colleges and trade schools offer training, typically taking longer and costing more than online options.
- Associate Degree Programs – A two-year option that includes general education courses but is not required to become a medical assistant in Oklahoma.

Gain Hands-On Experience Through an Externship
An externship provides practical experience under the guidance of a medical assistant. Stepful’s program supports externship opportunities, helping students to get interviews in local healthcare institutions that match their career growth.
Some other local Oklahoma organizations, not necessarily in partnership with Stepful, that could also offer externships opportunities are St. Francis Health System, Alliance Health, and Arbuckle Memorial Hospital.
04
Pass Your Medical Assistant Certification Exam
Throughout their training program, students will prepare to pass a certification exam. There are several different certifying agencies that are accepted by healthcare organizations and regulating agencies throughout the United States. These include:
- Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) offered by the American Medical Technologists
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) offered by the American Association of Medical Assistants
- Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) offered by the National Healthcareer Association.
Each medical assistant certification exam covers patient safety, infection control, health information systems, and anatomy. They all contain between 150-200 questions and have a similar cost and pass rate.
