How to get certified & become a Medical Assistant in New Hampshire

If you're considering a career in healthcare, becoming a medical assistant is a great way to enter the field quickly. Medical assistants work alongside physicians in clinics, hospitals, and outpatient centers, handling both clinical and administrative tasks. Most medical assistants can earn certification and start working within a few months.

01

Graduate from High School or Earn a GED

A high school diploma or GED is required for all medical assistants, whether or not they pursue a formal certification. If you haven’t completed high school, earning a GED can often be done in just a few weeks.

02

Enroll in a Medical Assistant Program

Aspiring medical assistants in New Hampshire can choose from a variety of different training programs.

Options include online courses, which typically are an affordable option and take a few months to complete, in-person trade school programs, which are slightly more expensive and require in-person attendance, or degree programs, which can cost more than $10,000 and take at least two years to complete.

Stepful’s online medical assistant program offers a flexible and affordable path to certification only within a few months of study 100% online.

03

Complete a Medical Assistant Externship

An externship provides hands-on experience and is a key part of medical assistant training. Students spend 40-140 hours working under an experienced medical assistant to develop clinical skills like measuring vital signs, drawing blood, and placing EKG leads.

Organizations in New Hampshire that may offer externship opportunities include:

Stepful also offers the opportunity to get interviews for externship opportunities and get the clinical hours you need! Get interview preparation and job search support after the certification.

04

Pass Your Medical Assistant Certification Exam

After completing training, students can take a certification exam. The most common certifications include:

  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) – American Association of Medical Assistants
  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) – American Medical Technologists
  • Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) – National Healthcareer Association

New Hampshire recognizes all three certifications, though some healthcare organizations may prefer one over another. The CCMA is more clinically focused and it’s the certification Stepful prepares their students to take in 4 months.

05

Find a Job

Medical assistants often turn to job search engines such as Indeed, Monster, and ZipRecruiter. These are great tools and can help future medical assistants find a job near them, within their desired salary range.

For those who need guidance when searching for a job, our medical assisting program helps students build resumes, practice interview skills, and search for open positions within their location.
