Weeks 1-4
Learn the foundational healthcare knowledge needed to become a well-rounded Medical Assistant. Topics include healthcare systems, medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
Weeks 5-8
Master the ins and outs of clinical patient care, such as infection control, phlebotomy, EKG, as well as patient care coordination and education.
Weeks 9-13
Learn how to handle routine administrative responsibilities and get a good grasp of medical law and ethics as well as excellent customer service.
Weeks 14-17+
Prepare for your national certification exam, get certified, and work with your dedicated coach to find an externship and then a full-time job.

Obtain Your High School Diploma or GED
A high school diploma or GED is a basic requirement for becoming a medical assistant, whether or not you pursue certification. If you haven't completed high school, GED programs can help you prepare quickly, often in just a few weeks.

Complete a Medical Assistant Training Program
Although Nevada does not require certification, most employers prefer hiring trained and certified medical assistants. There are two main types of programs:
- Degree Programs – Typically take two years and cost several thousand dollars.
- Certificate Programs – Can be completed in 4–12 months, cost a few hundred dollars, and offer flexible scheduling.
When choosing a training program, look for high certification exam pass rates, strong faculty support, and externship opportunities to gain hands-on experience. An externship allows students to work in a real healthcare setting under professional supervision, gaining experience in tasks such as:

Pass Your Medical Assistant Certification Exam
Certification is not mandatory in Nevada but greatly increases job prospects and salary potential. Common certification options include:
- Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) – National Healthcareer Association (NHA)
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) – American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)
- Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) – American Medical Technologists (AMT)

Begin Your Job Search
After completing training and earning certification, start searching for medical assistant jobs on Indeed, Monster, or ZipRecruiter. Nevada’s top healthcare employers, such as Renown Health and UMC, frequently hire medical assistants.
