Earn Your High School Diploma or GED
A high school diploma or GED is required to become a medical assistant. If you didn’t complete high school, you can earn a GED in just a few weeks through online or in-person programs.
02
Complete a Medical Assistant Training Program
Minnesota offers several training options, including online courses, in-person trade schools, and degree programs. While associate degrees take two years and cost over $10,000, most employers only require certification.
Stepful’s 4-month online Medical Assistant Training Program is an affordable and fast way to earn your certification. Our program prepares you for the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) exam, one of the most widely recognized credentials from the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
03
Gain Hands-On Experience Through an Externship
Externships, often included in training programs, provide real-world clinical experience. Students spend 40 to 140 hours working under an experienced medical assistant, learning skills like drawing blood and placing EKG leads.
Stepful connects students with externship opportunities to help them gain hands-on training. In Minnesota, externship sites may include Mayo Clinic, University of Minnesota, and Abbott Northwestern Hospital (not necessarily affiliated with Stepful).
04
Pass your Medical Assistant Certification Exam
Most training programs prepare students for industry-recognized certification exams, including:
- Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) – National Healthcareer Association (NHA)
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) – American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)
- Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) – American Medical Technologists (AMT)
These certifications validate your skills in patient care, infection control, and medical procedures and are recognized by employers across Minnesota.
