What you’ll learn

Weeks 1-4
Learn the foundational healthcare knowledge needed to become a well-rounded Medical Assistant. Topics include healthcare systems, medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
Weeks 5-8
Master the ins and outs of clinical patient care, such as infection control, phlebotomy, EKG, as well as patient care coordination and education.
Weeks 9-13
Learn how to handle routine administrative responsibilities and get a good grasp of medical law and ethics as well as excellent customer service.
Weeks 14-17+
Prepare for your national certification exam, get certified, and work with your dedicated coach to find an externship and then a full-time job.

Graduate from high school or complete your GED
The state of Michigan does not require certification or licensing for medical assistants. The only educational requirement is that you graduate from high school or earn your GED.

Enroll in & complete a medical assistant course
While the state doesn’t require specialized education or licensing, employers want their medical assistants to be trained and certified.

Complete a medical assistant externship
Medical assistant externships allow you to practice the skills you’ve learned in your classes in a real-world healthcare setting under professional supervision.
Here at Stepful, we help students who are in good academic and financial standing can find externship interviews with one of our 8,000 partner clinics. This includes 80 to 160 clinical hours that help you get hands-on experience before you start working full-time.

Pass your medical assistant certification exam
Medical assistant certification options include Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) from the NHA, Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) from the AAMA, and Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) from the AMT. They all have similar training requirements and exam fees and are widely respected by Michigan healthcare organizations.

However, having a certification—such as the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA), which is the one you’ll test for after completing our Michigan Medical Assistant Training Program—may help you get a job and earn a higher salary.
There are many healthcare careers in Michigan that must be licensed, such as physical therapists and nurses.
However, the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs does not require medical assistants to be registered or licensed.
In most states, medical assistants’ scope of practice includes things like taking vital signs and other basic clinical tasks. However, the laws in each state vary slightly.

What Medical Assistants Can Do in Michigan
Medical assistants in Michigan can do the following tasks:
- Measure vital signs
- Perform electrocardiography
- Perform venipuncture
- Perform pulmonary function testing
- Calculate proper dosages of medication for administration
- Administer oral and parenteral (excluding IV) medications
- Obtain specimens and perform CLIA-waived tests
- Perform wound care
- Perform dressing changes
Medical assistants in Michigan can receive and communicate information electronically for licensed providers as long as they avoid making independent clinical judgments and assessments.
In addition, medical assistants usually perform some administrative tasks, such as scheduling appointments, managing patient records, performing medical billing and coding, and more.
What Medical Assistants Cannot Do in Michigan
Medical assistants in Michigan are unlicensed individuals who work under the supervision of a physician or other licensed healthcare provider. Generally speaking, they are prohibited from examining, diagnosing, or treating patients.
Here are some specific tasks that medical assistants are not allowed to do:
- Medical assistants cannot be asked to perform any task that requires independent clinical judgment or the making of clinical assessments, evaluations, or interpretations.
- Medical assistants cannot be asked to perform any task reserved exclusively in Michigan law for other, often licensed, health professionals.
Common Medical Assistant Responsibilities in Michigan
Medical assistants typically perform a variety of clinical and administrative duties. These are common examples of the responsibilities medical assistants have in Michigan.
Administrative duties may include:
- Using computer applications
- Answering telephones
- Greeting patients
- Updating and filing patient medical records
- Coding and filling out insurance forms
- Scheduling appointments
- Arranging for hospital admissions and laboratory services
- Handling correspondence, billing, and bookkeeping
Clinical duties may include:
- Taking medical histories
- Explaining treatment procedures to patients
- Assisting the physician during examinations
- Collecting and preparing laboratory specimens
- Performing basic laboratory tests
- Instructing patients about medications and special diets
- Preparing and administering medications as directed by a physician
- Authorizing prescription refills as directed
- Drawing blood

What is the refund policy?
Students may drop out within the first two weeks of class and get a full tuition refund. Feel free to attend class to get a sense if this program is right for you. Please note the $59 enrollment fee to secure your spot in class is not refundable.
What are the requirements to enroll in your Medical Assistant program?
All you need is a copy of your high school or GED diploma and a stable internet connection for our course. That's all you need to learn the skills required to succeed as a medical assistant and get your medical assistant certification online.
Is the program online or in-person?
Our medical assistant program is 100% online and is followed by an optional in-person unpaid externship. Stepful has affiliation agreements with over 6,000 clinics across the nation and helps students get placed at an externship site for in-person clinical hours.
Do you have a partnership with the National Healthcareer Association (NHA)?
Yes! We are partnered with the NHA. All our graduates are eligible to take the NHA's national medical assistant certification once they successfully complete the program.
