How to get certified & become a Medical Assistant in Michigan

Medical assisting is a great choice for people interested in a healthcare career. Medical assistants earn a decent salary and are in demand. It’s meaningful work with good prospects and job security. Here are the steps required to become a medical assistant in Michigan:

01

Graduate from high school or complete your GED

The state of Michigan does not require certification or licensing for medical assistants. The only educational requirement is that you graduate from high school or earn your GED.

02

Enroll in & complete a medical assistant course

While the state doesn’t require specialized education or licensing, employers want their medical assistants to be trained and certified.

Training programs like Stepful’s Medical Assistant Training Program teach you medical terminology and skills that prepare you both for the job and a national certification exam.

Programs like ours can be completed in a few months entirely online. So, not only will you gain knowledge, skills, and confidence, but you will also increase your chances of getting hired.

03

Complete a medical assistant externship

Medical assistant externships allow you to practice the skills you’ve learned in your classes in a real-world healthcare setting under professional supervision.

Here at Stepful, we help students who are in good academic and financial standing can find externship interviews with one of our 8,000 partner clinics. This includes 80 to 160 clinical hours that help you get hands-on experience before you start working full-time.

Organizations in Michigan, not necessarily related to Stepful, that offer externships include Trinity Health Michigan, Bronson Healthcare, and the University of Michigan Health-West.

We work with students throughout their externship experience to make sure they have all the support they need to succeed.

04

Pass your medical assistant certification exam

Medical assistant certification options include Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) from the NHA, Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) from the AAMA, and Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) from the AMT. They all have similar training requirements and exam fees and are widely respected by Michigan healthcare organizations.

Here at Stepful, our Michigan Medical Assistant Training Program prepares students to test for their CCMA certification. Our students have an 87% pass rate, ten points higher than the national average.

05
