What you’ll learn

Weeks 1-4
Learn the foundational healthcare knowledge needed to become a well-rounded Medical Assistant. Topics include healthcare systems, medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
Weeks 5-8
Master the ins and outs of clinical patient care, such as infection control, phlebotomy, EKG, as well as patient care coordination and education.
Weeks 9-13
Learn how to handle routine administrative responsibilities and get a good grasp of medical law and ethics as well as excellent customer service.
Weeks 14-17+
Prepare for your national certification exam, get certified, and work with your dedicated coach to find an externship and then a full-time job.

01
Graduate from high school or complete your GED
All medical assistants, whether they earn a certification or not, must graduate from high school or earn their GED. Students and aspiring medical assistants will provide a copy of their diploma or certificate when enrolling in a medical training program or applying for jobs.

Enroll in & complete a medical assistant course
Courses are available online, through community colleges, or technical schools. Some students choose to earn an associate's degree in medical assisting, but this is optional for certification.
Even though certification is not required in Alaska, most employers prefer to hire medical assistants who have completed a training course and passed a certification exam.

Complete a medical assistant externship
Medical assisting externships are learning opportunities where students shadow a working medical assistant during their shifts. Organizations in Alaska that may offer externships include The Alaska Primary Care Association, Central Peninsula Hospital, and Mat-Su Health Services.
Because we understand the importance of getting in-person experience, our program at Stepful makes finding an externship interview easier. We work with students to get them an interview with one of affiliated clinics to secure an externship.*

Pass your medical assistant certification exam
Medical assistant certification options include the CMA, CCMA, RMA, and NCMA. They all have similar training requirements and examination fees and are widely accepted by Alaska healthcare organizations.
Here at Stepful, students are prepared to take the Clinical Certified Medical Assistant Exam (CCMA). This exam, offered by the National Healthcareer Association, focuses on clinical skills and is nationally recognized. The CCMA exam has 200 questions and a 160-minute time limit.

Our Stepful program includes job search support, like interview preparation and resume support to help our students get the job of their dreams. The Alaska Primary Care Association is another great resource for aspiring medical assistants looking for work in Alaska.
You are not required to have a certification to work as a medical assistant in Alaska. However, employers are much more likely to hire a certified medical assistant. The most common certifications for medical assistants include Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) from the NHA, Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) from the AAMA, and Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) from the AMT. Each of these certifications is accepted by healthcare employers in Alaska.

Medical assistants in Alaska do not need a license. They are, however, required to work under the supervision of a licensed registered nurse or medical doctor. The licensed provider is responsible for delegating tasks to the medical assistant.
What Medical Assistants Cannot Do in Alaska
The Alaska State Medical Board specifies that certain tasks should not be performed by a medical assistant. These tasks include:
- Providing services that are considered the practice of medicine
- Patient assessment or
- Evaluation of care
- Health counseling
- IV therapy
- Procedural sedation
- Home dialysis therapy
- Oral tracheal suction
- Medication management
- Injections
- Chemical peels,
- Liposuction
- Autotransplantation
- Administering Botox or dermal fillers
- Use of certain equipment such as lasers
What Medical Assistants Can Do in Alaska
Medical assistants in Alaska can perform tasks delegated to them by a licensed provider, as long as they are trained on how to perform the task, the task cannot cause harm to the patient, and the licensed provider is available to offer support when needed.
A medical assistant in Alaska can perform the following tasks:
- Measuring vital signs
- Dressing changes, including simple bandaging, wet-to-dry, and/or sterile dressing changes.
- Maintenance of ostomies (e.g. colostomy and urostomy)
- Drawing blood to send to the laboratory
- Application of oxygen via nasal cannula
- Insertion/Removal of Foley Catheter
- Removal of an intravenous catheter
- Documentation of procedures
- Administration of oral medications
- Ambulation with gait belt, walker, crutches, and/or wheelchair
- Active and passive range-of-motion (ROM) exercises
- Application of splints for contracture care
Administrative Tasks
- Answer phone calls
- Schedule appointments
- Handle billing and payments
- Organize supplies
- Maintain inventory
- Maintain patient records
- Document procedures
- Deal with insurance claims
