Earn Your High School Diploma or GED
Before becoming a medical assistant, you must have a high school diploma or GED. Many online high school and GED programs are available for those who need flexible learning options.

Complete a Medical Assistant Training Program
While New Mexico does not legally require medical assistants to complete a training program, most employers prefer hiring certified medical assistants. A quality training program covers patient care, medical terminology, infection control, medical billing, phlebotomy, and documentation.
Aspiring medical assistants in New Mexico can choose from two types of programs:
- Certificate Programs – Certificate programs, like the one offered by Stepful, can be completed online in as little as 4 months and are more affordable than degree programs
- Associate Degree Programs – Take about two years and can cost over $10,000.
Most hospitals and clinics do not require a degree but strongly prefer certification from an accredited training program.

Medical assistants in New Mexico are not required to have a license or register with the state medical board or board of nursing.
