*Please note, students must be available M-F, 9-5 p.m. to be eligible for externship support.
Whether you choose to enroll in a training program or try to apply for jobs without any training, you will be required to present proof of high school graduation or a GED for most situations.
If you are considering this healthcare career path but have not graduated high school, do not be discouraged. Students can enroll in an online course or take a GED exam, and most are ready to take their exam after just a few weeks of study.
In Kansas, there are a variety of training programs for medical assistants to choose from. Online programs are typically the shortest and least expensive and result in a medical assisting certificate. In-person certificate programs are slightly longer and more expensive and also result in a certificate only.
Here at Stepful we offer a 4-month program that prepares our students to take the most popular certification, the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) from the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
During an externship, medical assisting students spend several days or weeks following an experienced medical assistant and get hands-on practice working with patients. This is especially important for students who complete online training programs.
Some programs, like our own, offer interview opportunities so students can access externships programs and get the clinical experience needed to successfully complete the training.
Organizations in Kansas, not necessarily in partnerships with Stepful, that offer externship opportunities to future medical assistants may include the University of Kansas, Amberwell Health, and Stormont Vail Health.
After completing a training program and an externship, students should be prepared to take their certification exam. While there are several different certifying agencies, training programs typically prepare students to take a specific certification exam. The most popular and common one is the CCMA from the NHA.
Our experienced coaches at Stepful help students create and perfect their resumes and offer mock interview sessions, giving them the best chance possible at landing their dream job.
Aspiring medical assistants can also use job search engines such as Indeed, Monster, and ZipRecruiter. Searching directly on a company website is another good option for medical assistants who have a particular organization in mind.
