All medical assistants are required to have a high school diploma or its equivalent. If you do not have a high school diploma, do not get discouraged. Most students are able to pass their GED exam after just a few weeks of study.
Medical assistants have several different options when choosing medical assisting courses. There are online programs, community college courses, technical colleges, and university programs. Students can choose certificate-only programs or can choose to earn a degree.
Stepful’s online program can be completed in 4 months and it prepares students for the most common medical assistant certification which is the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA).
Many medical assisting programs end their training with an externship. When students participate in an externship, they work unpaid hours with an experienced medical assistant to gain hands-on experience.
At Stepful we directly support our students to get interviews for placements at their local healthcare facilities. Other local organizations that are not necessarily associated with us but offer externship opportunities to medical assistants may include Indiana University Health and Ascension Health.
Medical assistant training programs typically prepare their students to take one of several certification exams available for aspiring medical assistants.
Our students achieve an impressive 87% pass rate on the CCMA Certification Exam, exceeding the national average by more than 10 percentage points. Earning this certification demonstrates your skills and readiness to employers, opening doors to better job opportunities and higher earning potential.
Job candidates with a certification are much more competitive applicants than those who are uncertified. Earning certification shows potential employers that you have the knowledge to fulfill your job responsibilities safely and that you are dedicated to your career.
In addition to giving students a leg up by helping them earn their certification, our staff here at Stepful helps students create a great resume and practice their interview skills to land their dream job.
Aspiring medical assistants can also use job search engines such as Indeed, Monster, and ZipRecruiter. If you are hoping to apply to a specific organization, you may be able to apply directly on the company website.
