How do clinical hours (Externships) work in Utah?

Your clinical externship is an unpaid opportunity to get hands-on training to gain experience in the field allowing you to utilize the skills and apply the knowledge acquired in your training.
You are required to fulfill all hours required by your externship site. Externship hours must be a minimum of 130 hours.
Once you opt into externships, you will be assigned an externship team who will support you throughout the externship process.

Stepful provides access to our Career Search Platform, which allows you to search and contact sites near you in Utah to secure an externship.

You can complete hours on a full-time or part-time basis.
- Full-time externships require a minimum of 8 hours per day (not including lunch breaks), 40 hours per week; completed in consecutive weeks.
- Part-time externships require a minimum of 4 hours per day (not including lunch breaks) and 3 days per week, 20 hours per week; completed in consecutive weeks.
You are required to be available during regular business hours (8 am - 6pm) and weekdays (Mon - Fri).

Are clinical hours (Externships) guaranteed in Utah?

- Proactively reaching out to sites who could potentially host you for your externship through the Career Search Platform
- Completing any additional onboarding requirements for your site as shared by your externship team (such as additional documents or proof of vaccination)
- Staying responsive and in good communication with your externship team

Some things that can delay externship placement:
- Not completing eligibility and onboarding requirements on time
- Not proactively calling sites that could host your externship
- Missing deadlines, being unresponsive, or acting unprofessionally with your externship team
- Missing scheduled interviews or acting unprofessionally with a site partner
- Limited site availability, especially in rural areas

By staying engaged and professional, you’ll put yourself in the best position to secure an externship quickly and smoothly.

Which pharmacy technician certification exam am I eligible to take after completing this program in Utah?
