In Arizona, medical assistants do not have to pass a certification exam. However, the Arizona Medical Board requires medical assistants to verify that they have completed a board-approved training program. Medical assistants in Arizona commonly perform both clinical and administrative tasks. Medical assistants are unlicensed individuals who work under the supervision of a licensed registered nurse or medical doctor. They cannot examine, diagnose, or treat patients. They also may not administer medications through IV lines, give blood or blood products, access feeding tubes, or perform procedures beyond what has been delegated and for which they have been trained.
